Patagonia’s W Trek vs O Circuit: Which One Is Right for You?

 If you’re planning a hiking trip to Torres del Paine National Park, you’ve probably run into the same question every trekker faces: W Trek or O Circuit? Both routes pass through some of the most dramatic landscapes in Patagonia, but they’re built for different travelers. Here’s how to decide.

The W Trek: Patagonia’s Highlights in One Route

The W Trek is the most popular hiking route in Torres del Paine, and for good reason. In 5–6 days, it connects the park’s three signature landscapes:

• Base Torres viewpoint — the sunrise view of the granite towers that define Patagonia in every postcard
• Valle del Francés — a hanging valley framed by glaciers on both sides, with regular avalanche activity you can watch (and hear) from the trail
• Glaciar Grey — a massive glacier fed by the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, best seen from the Grey viewpoint or by boat

The trail is shaped like the letter W, hence the name, and it’s a there-and-back route along three valleys rather than a loop. That makes it more flexible for travelers with limited time, and easier to combine with refugios (mountain lodges) rather than full camping gear.

Best for: first-time visitors to Patagonia, travelers with 5–7 days available, and anyone who wants the classic postcard views without committing to a full-length expedition.

The O Circuit: The Complete Torres del Paine Experience

The O Circuit includes everything in the W, plus the remote backside of the massif — the John Gardner Pass and a closer approach to the Southern Ice Field. It takes 8–9 days to complete and requires camping for most of the route, since refugios are scarcer on the back side.

Best for: experienced trekkers, travelers with more time in Chile, and those who want true wilderness sections with far fewer people on the trail.
